Similarity and Competition between Biginelli and Hantzsch Reactions: an Opportunity for Modern Medicinal Chemistry

The tuning strategies to alternatively obtain 3,4‐dihydropyrimidin‐2‐(1H )‐ones (DHPMs) and 1,4‐dihydropyridines (1,4‐DHPs), starting from the same reagents and with similar conditions, are summarized. The literature discloses the possibility of using the similarity and competition between Hantzsch and Biginelli reactions to obtain important chemical scaffolds for the pharmaceutical industry through interchangeable multicomponent reactions (MCRs).
