Tropical dry forests (TDF) are widely distributed globally and are one of the most threatened ecosystems (Ceballos et al., 2010; Miles et al., 2006). The main causes of tropical dry forest loss and degradation are agricultural expansion and intense livestock grazing within remaining forest patches (Dirzo, Young, Mooney, & Ceballos, 2011; Janzen, 1988; Jaramillo, García-Oliva, & Martínez-Yrízar, 2010; Maass et al., 2010; Portillo-Quintero, Sanchez-Azofeifa, CalvoAlvarado, Quesada, & do Espirito Santo, M. M, 2015; Trejo, 2010). This has resulted in reductions in species diversity and changes to the composition, structure, and functional integrity of these ecosystems (Chazdon et al., 2016; García-Oliva & Jaramillo, 2011; Poorter et al., 2016). A long history of shifting cultivation within Neotropical TDF has resulted in forests with stands at different stages of secondary succession, each characterized by communities that differ in composition, structure, and function (Chazdon, 2014).
