Edible forest insects are consumed regularly as a major dish or a food supplement by members of various rural communities in southeast Asia, the Pacific, sub-Saharan Africa and Central and South America. Family livelihood is thus supported particularly during periods of food insecurity and natural disasters. Traditionally, local healers use insects and insect products to cure ailments and health disorders. However, the validity of this practice has in most cases not yet been verified, recognized and recommended by medical practitioners/physicians and government health and family welfare departments. This narrative review discusses the current practices of entomophagy, i.e. the habit of eating of insects, and its pros and cons for the future development in connection with family livelihood and wellness. Constraints to entomophagy with possible solutions are also addressed.
