In Reply We first thank the authors of these letters for taking the time to comment on our work1 and for their shared interest in improving diversity, equity, and inclusivity in surgery. The primary goals of publishing our data were to identify racial, ethnic, and sex differences in board passage rates as a problem and to stimulate conversation around how to take action to improve metrics that appear to demonstrate significant gaps based on resident demographics. Our work is not meant to be conclusive, but a foundation to inform a process of developing evidence-based interventions. Our group has been studying surgical residency training for more than a decade, and we have repeatedly demonstrated that there are disparities in training and training experiences. We were pleased to see the letters written in response to our research and hope that they will help to spark a conversation about some of the issues. We hope this is just the beginning of conversations that will not stop until we have better solutions and a more diverse and inclusive profession.
