The impression I get from Michael Hurley, now 36 years, working and living, with his wife, in Las Vegas (NV, USA), is that he was just a regular, active 17-year-old. In May 2001, on a school trip to Spain, he developed bronchial symptoms: “I was coughing a lot, but at 17, I was not really in tune with my body, and we think we are invincible at that age”, he says. “It persisted and got worse and worse, but I never thought it was something major that I needed to seek medical attention for.” Back home (Indianapolis, IN, USA), at the end of July, after a visit to a physician, he was diagnosed with pneumonia (mainly annoying because “I had to quit smoking”), but Michael's health continued to deteriorate. For a week, he was vomiting, losing weight, having night sweats, and eventually coughing up blood. But when he had a very real, and alarming, sensation that he couldn't breathe, he was taken to the emergency room by his family.
