Extraction of Phenolic Compounds from Fresh and Wilt Kesum Plant using Liquid Biphasic Flotation

This study focuses on the application of the liquid biphasic flotation (LBF) system for the extraction of phenolic compounds using fresh and wilted Persicaria tenella, commonly known as ‘daun kesum’ or ‘laksa leaf’. Persicaria tenella have been studied intensively due to its possession of antioxidant activities which assists in reducing the risk of cancer and various other uses. For fresh samples, the optimum condition was obtained using the combination of 90% (w/w) of ethanol and 300 mg/L of dipotassium hydrogen phosphate (K2HPO4), flotation time of 7 min, system pH of 9.5, 2% weight ratio of Persicaria tenella extract and 100 cc/min of flotation rate. With this, a recovery yield of 13.69% and a separation efficiency of 76.79% were achieved. For wilted samples, the optimum condition was gained using 100% (w/w) of ethanol and 250 mg/L of ammonium sulphate ((NH4)2SO4), flotation time of 9 min, system pH of 5, 1% weight ratio of Persicaria tenella extract and 100 cc/min of flotation rate. With this, a recovery yield of 12.36% and a separation efficiency of 85.39% were achieved. The sample was subjected to the determination of Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) to evaluate its antioxidant capacity after optimization.
