The Importance of Pressure-sensitive Pinch/Azeotrope Feature on Economic Distillation Design

Pressure-sensitive pinch features that in a certain concentration zone, the equilibrium vapor composition of one key component is fairly close to its liquid composition and that the vapor composition significantly shifts with pressure variations. This characteristic, quite similar to that of pressure-sensitive azeotrope, could offer significant economic potential, but it receives little attention previously. In this work, a systematic procedure is presented via “pinch or not?” judgment to ensure always achieving the economic optimal distillation design for universal systems. Pinch definition and possibilities is quantitatively defined and the criterion, formation and transformation of pinch zone are systematically proposed. Three cases are employed to demonstrate the economic potential, confirming effectiveness of the presented procedure. It should be stressed that chemical engineer shall take full advantage of the particularity of pressure-sensitive pinch/azeotrope to achieve possible economic potential.
