Abstract In this paper, we study the relationship between t -core Young diagrams and t -core shifted Young diagrams. In particular, we obtain a characterization of t -core shifted Young diagram. Furthermore, we apply the characterization to deduce the number and the largest size of ( t , t + 1 ) -core shifted Young diagrams.
