White light emission of CdSiO3:Gd,TM (TM = Ni, Cr) phosphors

Abstract The present work reports the properties of CdSiO3 samples co-doped with Gd3+,Cr3+ and Gd3+,Ni2+ presenting white light emission. The samples were prepared by conventional solid-state method and were well crystallized under calcination at 1000 °C for 8 h in open atmosphere. Powders presented sub-micrometric sized particles with low degree of agglomeration. Optical absorption, photoluminescence (emission and decay curves) and thermoluminescence measurements were used to characterize the phosphors. Under excitation at 245 nm, the samples presented white light emission as the result of a three-band spectra. The possible mechanisms of luminescence are discussed, which are attributed to the role of the rare-earth and transition metal ions incorporated as well as the intrinsic defects of the host matrix. The chromaticity coordinates and correlated color temperature values found for CdSiO3:Gd,Ni are very close to the commercial available white emitting diodes.
