Featured in this issue of CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians (CA) is a new article type entitled “Virtual Tumor Board.” As the care of patients with cancer becomes increasingly complex and therapeutic options become more nuanced, the input of providers from different aspects of the care spectrum is more critical than ever to optimal decision making for patients. The editorial board of CA recognizes that many clinicians and their patients are not always poised to engage in a true multidisciplinary dialogue regarding their therapeutic decisions. Furthermore, reviewing the exchange of another multidisciplinary group can also help other similar groups to consider factors that otherwise may not have been prioritized previously.

This inaugural article in our series focuses on a patient with a complicated case of melanoma. The participants and contributors in this particular segment included individuals from the medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, and oncologic nursing disciplines and, in a very special aspect of the contribution, the patient's own perspective on his diagnosis and treatment course.

We hope that this series provides a context for patients and their providers across the spectrum of malignancies and the range of institutions and throughout the vast array of geographic and demographic settings that enjoy the content of CA. The “Virtual Tumor Board” series endeavors to include input from medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, oncologic nursing specialists, pathologists, radiologists, patients themselves, and other members of the care team as appropriate.
