J. Michael Bailey is Professor of Psychology at Northwestern University. He has devoted most of his career to the scientific study of sexual orientation and related traits, including gender nonconformity and gender identity. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the American Institute of Bisexuality. It has also been publicly visible, provoking several articles in the New York Times and the Boston Globe, as well as episodes of 60 Minutes and 20/20. Bailey has learned that advancing knowledge in controversial areas such as sexual orientation requires risking offense to both social conservatives and social liberals. For example, his use of pornographic stimuli in NIH-funded studies of sexual orientation angered some who disagreed with the use of federal funding for sex research (especially research that employs pornography). His book about a controversial (if scientifically well-supported) theory of transsexualism was criticized by transwomen who did not want to be classified as exemplars of the theory. Bailey says that he does not intend to upset people, but uncovering the truth is worth some upset. He persists in his agreement with the Faber College motto: “Knowledge is good.”
