In 2003, Gideon Mendel grabbed the attention of the international media with A Broken Landscape, a collection of emotive and often shocking black and white photographs and first-person narratives depicting the AIDS crisis in eight African countries. At the time, the work prompted some controversy: it helped to raise awareness of the grim realities where access to antiretroviral drugs was still limited, but some critics accused Mendel of portraying African communities as passive victims. His latest , Through Positive Eyes, published this year by Aperture, could not be more different. Abandoning the humanist photographic tradition and the African focus that made him famous, he has instead travelled across all five continents to put cameras in the hands of people living with HIV.
