Effect of hot isostatic pressing on structure and properties of intermetallic NiAl–Cr–Mo alloy produced by selective laser melting

Abstract Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is an additive manufacturing technology commonly applied for direct fabrication of complex-shaped parts from metal powders. In the current paper encapsulated hot isostatic pressing (HIP) is applied to improve the structure and mechanical properties of the NiAl intermetallic alloy part produced by SLM. It was found that HIP treatment of SLM samples consolidated the material, eliminated the cracks, and significantly reduced the porosity. Mechanical properties of the HIPed SLM samples at different temperatures were also tested and compared with the properties of cast and powder sintered samples. Compression tests of the SLM samples after HIP showed that the yield strength decreased from 750 MPa to 260 MPa if the temperature increases from 700 °C to 1100 °C correspondingly. Besides significant structure improvement, the yield strength of SLM samples after HIP still about 25% and 15% lower than for the cast and powder sintered samples correspondingly in the tested temperature range.
