Lateral Flow Assay for Deoxynivalenol in Barley: An ASBC Collaborative Subcommittee Report

Abstract A collaborative test was performed to determine the repeatability and reproducibility coefficients of variation for the Lateral Flow Assay for deoxynivalenol (also known as DON or vomitoxin) in barley prior to inclusion of this method in the ASBC Methods of Analysis. Deoxynivalenol interacts with colored beads in the lateral flow test strip and the color intensity in the test zone is measured using a strip reader and interpreted as mg/L deoxynivalenol. The repeatability and reproducibility coefficients of variation for deoxynivalenol in barley, by lateral flow assay, ranged from 9.7 to 18.7% and 13.3 to 32.9%, respectively, and were judged acceptable. The subcommittee recommended that this method for deoxynivalenol in barley, by lateral flow assay, as conducted in this collaborative study, could be included in the ASBC Methods of Analysis.
