The Lancet Psychiatry

“And you may ask yourself, ‘Well, how did I get here?’” Once in a Lifetime by Talking Heads comes from a pre-digital era, but lead singer David Byrne's question is one that fits well with current concerns about the internet and its effect on society. With astonishing technological development has come a reassessment of previously optimistic assumptions: that the internet would provide a great democratising force of freely flowing information, and that only good things could come out of greater connectivity. Technology use and the mental health of children and young people, a report from the Royal College of Psychiatrists, addresses one of the greatest areas of concern. It asks what effect the digital world has on children and young people, and what can be done about it.
