Abstract In this paper, we analyze microstructures of alloy 625 coatings deposited by three different methods in the context of their elastic properties. Dominant microstructural features of coatings produced by air plasma spraying, wire arc spraying and cold spraying technologies are identified. Effective elastic properties are given in terms of the proper microstructural parameters. The major microstructural parameters affecting overall Young's moduli of air plasma and wire arc sprayed alloy 625 coatings are crack density and concentration of chromium oxide platelets formed during the deposition process; while the major parameter for cold sprayed coating is dislocation density at the grain boundaries. Predictions of the effective Young's modulus in the plane normal to the deposition direction, made on the basis of the microstructural analysis, were tested against experimental measurements. It is demonstrated that the developed framework can be directly linked to microstructural data obtained from the analysis of photomicrographs.
