Preparation of tin-zinc alloy foam

Abstract The low melting point tin-zinc (Sn-9Zn) alloy foam was successfully prepared by direct foaming method. Titanium hydride and calcium are proved to be practicable as blowing agents and melt foam stabilizers respectively. The microstructure investigation on cell walls indicated that the formation of calcium stannate (CaSnO3) plays a key role in cell wall formation and bubble stabilization, apart from the particles derived from foaming agents. Quasi-static compressive curves of Sn-Zn alloy foams are characterized by three stages: elastic deforming, large plastic deforming and densification stage, indicating an outstanding energy absorption capability.
