Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl methacrylate: kinetic and structural features

The reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl methacrylate (TFPMA) in the presence of different chain transfer agents (CTAs) was investigated. It was shown that 2-cyano-2-propyldodecyl trithiocarbonate (CPDT) and 4-cyano-4-[(dodecylsulfanylthiocarbonyl)sulfanyl]pentanoic acid (CDTPA) is more effective to control molar mass characteristics. The Ctr estimate was defined using the size exclusion chromatography measurements, the values are 1.6 (CPDT) and 3.2 (CDTPA). The effect of solvent used in sample preparation in MALDI-TOF MS analysis on PTFPMA spectra resolution was investigated. The use of methanol led to the highest signal/noise ratio. The end-groups analysis was carried out by means of MALDI-TOF MS and MS/MS method. The polymeric RAFT agent provides for lower values of dispersity of obtained polymers as compared to other techniques used (Mn = 10-44 kDa, Đ = 1.16 – 1.3). Moreover, it allows to obtain narrow-disperse fluorocontaining amphiphilic block copolymers with diverse nature of hydrophilic moiety (such as acrylic and methacrylic acid, glycidyl methacrylate, Đ = 1.1 – 1.3).
