Influence of the T-stub flexibility on its strength

The T-stub is one of the most important structural components in steel frames, since its behaviour affects the behaviour and stability of the entire structure. The present study is devoted to the analytical investigation of the behaviour of this component and mainly of the bending that occurs on the bolts due to the T stub flange deformability. Moreover, the influence on its ultimate strength is studied. In addition, the problem is also examined by utilizing a finite element procedure with a three dimensional model of a simple T-stub. The model includes geometrical and material nonlinearities. The results of the finite element analysis indicate that the theoretical approach related to occurring bending on the bolts is real and some times controls the reduced strength of this component.
