Preparation and characterization of self-matting waterborne polymer–An overview

Abstract The matt waterborne coating possesses the characteristics of green environmental protection, soft luster and broad application. At present, achieving the matting effect of the coating is mainly by adding external matting agent into the formula or synthesizing self-matting polymer. On account of the defects produced by adding external matting agent like lowering the emulsion stability, fabricating self-matting waterborne polymer with excellent properties has drawn increasing attention. In this paper, strategies for obtaining matting effect and the factors affecting glossiness were firstly introduced. In order to synthesize self-matting waterborne polymer with good matting performance, the methods for constructing surface roughness and the design of membrane phase component materials, which were the two important aspects governing the matting performance of waterborne self-matting polyurethane and acrylic polymer were reviewed subsequently in detail. In addition, the evaluation of matting performance, and characterization of surface roughness and membrane phase structure were summarized. Last but not least, the development trend of self-matting waterborne polymer was prospected.
