Use of a charcoal salt bridge to a reference electrode in an alkaline solution

Abstract A porous charcoal junction as a salt bridge at the end of the Ag/AgCl reference electrode was applied in an alkaline solution. The impedance of the Ag/AgCl wire with the use of the charcoal junction was similar to that of the glass frit in saturated KCl. The dilution rate of the reference solution of sat. KCl with the use of charcoal frit is slower than that of the glass frit. The charcoal junction was successfully used as a reference electrode in the KOH, though the use of glass frit was not able to obtain any electrochemical results in the KOH. The charcoal junction is useful to be applied as a salt bridge at the reference electrode in an alkaline solution.
