Social communication: In a sense, microorganisms can communicate with neighbours through small chemical molecules such as secondary metabolites. This Minireview summarizes recent impressive achievements in the field of chemical communication in microbial co‐culture systems, including: 1) attack and defence, 2) chromosome remodelling, 3) anti‐phage infection, 4) predation and anti‐predation, 5) resource competition, and 6) chemical space expansion. In particular, we herein focus on and highlight the process of microbial chemical communication itself. More information can be found in the Minireview by Hideaki Kakeya and Chao Liu.
