NHC‐Ni(II)‐Catalyzed [3+2] Cross‐Dimerization of Unactivated Olefin and Methylenecyclopropane.

Cross‐dimerization of methylenecyclopropane 1 (or 1¢) and unactivated alkene 2 over a typical hydroalkenylation reactivity was observed for the first time by using a new [NHC‐Ni(allyl)]BArF catalyst. Results showed that the C‐C cleavage of 1 (or 1') did not involve a Ni(0) oxidative addition, which is crucial in former systems. This emerges a complementary method for attaining highly chemo‐ and regio‐selective synthesis of methylenecyclopentane 3 and broad scope. An efficient NHC‐Ni(II) catalyzed rearrangement of 1 (or 1') was found liable for convergent synthesis of 3 in the presence of 2.
