Perceptual filling-in can be used asan effective tool to probe the characterof visual representations. For example,does perceptual filling-in imply that thebrain ‘reconstructs’ the visual scene,thus supporting the percept reportedby subjects? For instance, is the brighttriangle perceived in Fig. 1A caused byan associated pattern of firing in topo-graphically organized visual areas, suchas cortical area V2? Or are more ‘cogni-tive’ or symbolic processes (which are,to be sure, also associated with under-lying neural processes) involved? Forinstance, in Figs 1B and 1C are our per-cepts the result of mechanisms thatsimply tag an entire region with a‘more-of-the-same’ label? A careful ex-amination of the data shows that nogeneral inferences are possible
