Dose-Response Curves for Dominant Lethal Mutations Induced in the Sperm and Oöcytes of Screw-Worm Flies1 by N,N'-Tetraniethylenebis (1-Aziridinecarboxamide)

Adult Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), treated with graded doses of N,N '-tetramethylenebis(1-aziridinecarboxamide), were mated with untreated flies, and the frequency of induced dominant lethal mutations was determined. At first, the percentages of mutations increased rapidly with increasing dose, then the percentages increased more slowly. Intrathoracically injected flies required about 1/20 the topical dose needed to achieve an equal percentage of induced mutations in the mature sperm of treated flies. The sensitivity of oocytes to the chemical mutagen increased as the meiotic stage of the nuclei advanced: 3-day-old oocytes and mature sperm were about equally susceptible; 6- and 0-day-old oocytes were more or less susceptible, respectively, than the 3-day-old oocytes.
