Position (postdoctoral fellow): analytical chemistry in food safety


Dr. Xiaonan Lu's Food Safety & Health Engineering Laboratory at UBC invites applications for1 Postdoctoral Fellowship position, with an anticipated start date of December 1st, 2019. The position is located in the Food, Nutrition and Health (FNH) program in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems (Vancouver campus) (http://foodsafetyengineering.landfood.ubc.ca/  ). The successful candidate will execute research of using some of the following research techniques for food safety study: 1) microfluidic “lab-on-a-chip”, 2) isothermal amplification (e.g., loop-mediated isothermal amplification, recombinase polymerase amplification, etc.), 3) aptamer and molecularly-imprinted polymers, 4) mass spectrometry, 5) surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, 6) fluorescence- and nano-materials (e.g., quantum dots, upconversion nanoparticles, graphene, black phosphorus, etc.). The aforementioned research topics are currently supported by several Canadian funding agencies. The candidate will work closely with Dr. Xiaonan Lu (Associate Professor in Food Science) and graduate students, and will be involved in collaborative work with different research laboratories on UBC Vancouver campus, BC Center for Disease Control, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and BC Children Hospital. The appointment will be for 1 year with the possibility of extension for two additional years.


Candidates must have a PhD in analytical chemistry, material chemistry, food science, biomedical engineering, or a related field, and preference will be given to those with experience with detection of targeted analytes in a complicated sample matrix, such as clinical, environment, and food products. Candidates with demonstrated contributions relating to synthesis of nanomaterials, point-of-care diagnosis, instrumental analysis and development of lateral flow assays are encouraged to apply. Candidates are responsible for training graduate students for the basic analytical chemistry skills.
