Journal of Integrative Environmental Sciences (JIES) provides a stimulating, informative and critical forum for intellectual debate on significant environmental issues. It brings together perspectives from a wide range of disciplines and methodologies in both the social and natural sciences in an effort to develop integrative knowledge about the processes responsible for environmental change, the impact of environmental change on nature and society, and possible solutions. The Journal is especially concerned with the relationships between science, society and policy and one of its key aims is to advance understanding of the theory and practice of sustainable development.
The subject matter, authorship and readership are international in scope and cover issues from across a range of scales, from the global to the local. As such, research pertaining to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is particularly relevant. Key themes include: integrated assessment methodologies; governance and regulation; technology and innovation; science, society and policy; and knowledge, perceptions and discourse.
A prerequisite for articles to be accepted is that they report on integrative research, where integration can be defined in different ways, for instance, integration across disciplines, societal sectors, scales, environmental issues, the cause–effect chain, or the supply chain. The journal publishes work on a wide range of issues, including:
- Energy
- Food
- Water
- Climate change
- Pollution, waste
- Urban sustainability
- Biodiversity conservation
- Education on sustainability
- Environment and development
- Environmental management systems
Journal of Integrative Environmental Sciences publishes original material, including theoretical developments, new empirical data, innovative methods and policy analysis. The Journal publishes original research articles, review articles, essays, research notes and book reviews. The journal also publishes occasional Special Issues covering interdisciplinary research and policy perspectives on specific environmental issues. Published papers are accessible to a wide audience that comprises natural and social scientists, professionals and policy makers.
Journal of Integrative Environmental Sciences (JIES) is a fully open access journal. This means all submitted articles will, if accepted, be available for anyone to read, anywhere, at any time, immediately on publication. There are no subscription charges for this journal.

Research interests Carolien Kroeze is has been involved in integrated assessment studies, with a special emphasis on water systems and global change. She focuses on large scale modelling of aquatic and terrestrial systems to improve understanding of the relationship between human activity and environmental quality. Her research includes environmental systems analysis, scenario analyses and evaluation of environmental policies aiming at simultaneous abatement of multiple environmental problems.
Message to the authors “Our journal strives to make a real difference. We welcome contributions to the journal that help us better understand transitions society needs to move towards sustainable development. Meeting the Sustainable Development Goals will be a major challenge in the coming decades, and we need integrative studies that help us meet these goals. Identifying solutions for the big environmental issues that we are facing requires a synthesis of knowledge from the social and natural sciences, and involvement of stakeholders.”

Prof. Dr. Henri (Henk) C. Moll Editor in Chief for the Journal of Integrative Environmental Sciences Chairholder Natural Resource Use for Sustainable Production and Consumption at the University of Groningen
Website https://www.rug.nl/staff/h.c.moll/
Research interests Henri Moll has co-ordinated several (interdisciplinary) research projects in the National (Dutch) Research Programme on Global Air Pollution and Climate Change. He was responsible for the Dutch contribution to the EU sponsored project ToolSust (the involvement of stakeholders to develop and implement tools for sustainable households in the cities of tomorrow).
Under his guidance, energy scenario studies have been developed addressing the implementation of renewable energy sources in the northern regions of the Netherlands for the period 2010 – 2035. Presently, the major subject of his research attention are the future role of natural gas and its substitutes (biogas, SNG) in the Netherlands and the European energy system as well as their consequences for the environment and land use change.
He has participated in several international networks concerning lifecycle analysis, material flow accounting, system-modelling and sustainable development. At the methodological level, his personal research priorities are system dynamics approaches related to sustainable development issues as well as the further development and application of chain and lifecycle like methodologies (addressing energy, material and environmental issues).
Message to the authors “In my scientific career, I have supervised the writing of about 100 scientific articles, reports and conference contributions. I have also reviewed approximately 100 scientific articles. Scientific writing and publishing of significant articles are of utmost importance for the advancement of science in general, and environmental sciences especially. As a reviewer, my responsibility is to (de)select original and new papers. But more importantly, my role is to advise the authors on how to improve their contribution to science. As editor, my priorities remain the same: looking for the advancement of environmental sciences by publishing relevant and original scientific work and challenging scientists from all over the world to deliver outstanding articles. Sustainable development, climate change, circular economy and energy transitions are important global challenges to be addressed in our journal. A multidisciplinary approach is needed to study and advance these topics. Keeping in mind the slogans: ‘think globally act locally’ and ‘the devil is in the detail’, next to top-down perspectives, bottom-up perspectives are relevant for our journal. Nonetheless, science also implies the ability to generalize from a local case and to critically analyse the general implications of specific results.”
