Elisa rejoined Nature Communications in 2019 as Editor-in-Chief, responsible for the overall editorial strategy of the journal. With a background in electronics and physics, she obtained her PhD at the University of Cambridge and was a postdoctoral researcher at the Hitachi Cambridge Laboratory. Elisa is based in London.

David moved to Nature Communications in 2014 after eight years on the editorial teams of Nature Photonics and Nature Physics. Nathalie joined Nature Communications in 2019 after 14 years on the editorial teams of Nature Cell Biology and Nature. She studied molecular and cell biology at the ENS-Ulm in Paris, and joined the EMBL graduate programme in Heidelberg in 1995. She also carried out post-doctoral work at the Gurdon Institute in Cambridge. Nathalie oversees the journal’s content in life and clinical sciences. Nathalie is based in London.

Fiona joined Nature Communications in February 2016 as Editorial Administration Manager before moving to the role of Managing Editor in February 2017. Lina completed her PhD in Trinity College, Dublin. Her doctoral research involved the use of linear and non-linear optical techniques for the study of plasmonic and chiral nanostructures. For her post-doctoral studies she joined Dublin Institute of Technology to develop a holographic label against counterfeiting. She then moved to the Optoelectronics Research Centre at the University of Southampton where she investigated the deposition of materials in micro-structured optical fibres for the study of non-linear optical phenomena.  Lina handles manuscripts in various areas of photonics and metamaterials and she is based in the London office.

Associate Editor: Marco Bentivegna
Marco completed his MS in particle physics and his PhD in quantum information and quantum optics in Sapienza University of Rome. For his doctoral research, he worked on quantum computation and simulation using integrated photonic circuits. His post-doctoral appointment involved performing experiments on quantum nonlocality and contextuality. He handles manuscripts in quantum information, computation and communication, fundamental aspects of quantum theory, information theory and high energy physics. Marco is based in the London office.

Bishwanath has MS in plasma physics from Tribhuvan University and PhD in physics from Kansas State University. His doctoral research was on laser induced molecular fragmentation using coincidence momentum imaging technique. He continued research on photon-matter interaction using X-rays as a postdoctoral fellow at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. After his diploma from the University of Greifswald on photonic crystals, Alex received his PhD from the University of Magdeburg on the topic of quantum dot based microcavity lasers and theory of many/few-body correlations. For his post-doc Alex went first to the Max Planck institute for the physics of complex systems Dresden, and then to the BEC centre Trento. As a post-doc Alex continued his work on photon statistics of micro lasers and worked on the theoretical characterization of photon BECs, Coulomb enhanced optical nonlinearities in quantum wells, and basic questions in quantum optics. Alex is based in the Berlin office and handles manuscripts on topological photonics/acoustics, nonlinear optics and nanophotonic lasing.

Associate Editor: Ahne Myklatun 
Ahne joined Nature Communications in January 2019. After receiving a MSc in biophysics and medical technology from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, she obtained her PhD from the Technical University Munich. The project and the follow up postdoctoral research was performed in an interdisciplinary collaboration at the Helmholtz Centre Munich, where she investigated the neurobehavioural responses of animal models to electromagnetic fields. After receiving her MASt in mathematics from the University of Cambridge, Heather completed her PhD in physics at the University of New Mexico and Sandia National Labs where she worked on a miniature trapped-ion atomic clock. Richard joined Nature Communications in August 2016. He received his PhD in condensed matter theory from the University of Cambridge, studying the theory of polariton condensates. Nilda joined Nature Communications in September 2018. She graduated from both the Astronomy and Space Sciences Department and the Physics Department of Istanbul University. She investigated spectropolarimetric properties of unresolved magnetic features of  the Solar photosphere in the International Max Planck Research School for Solar System Science, and obtained a PhD from the Physics Department of University of Göttingen. She then moved to the planetary department of the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research to join the Rosetta mission. After the mission, she continued working on the spacecraft data in the Asteroids and Comets department of German Aerospace Center Institute of Planetary Research. Kanudha started her editorial career at Nature Communications in November 2017. Senior Editor: Alexa McKay
Alexa obtained her PhD from the Odum School of Ecology at the University of Georgia, where she conducted research in the fields of animal behavior, animal physiology, and disease ecology. As an editor at Nature Communications, Alexa handles papers in many diverse areas of ecology (microbial, population, community, ecosystem, and theoretical) and zoology. She has been with the journal since May 2016 and is based in the New York office.

Associate Editor: Wenfei Tong
Wenfei handles evolution manuscripts. She has worked on cooperation and conflict within and between species. Her PhD is from Harvard, and she did postdocs at the original Cambridge, and the University of Montana in Missoula. She also writes popular science, including a book on bird family life. Wenfei joined the Nature Communications team in October 2019, and is based in the New York office.

Senior Editor: Michelle Trenkmann
Michelle has a degree in biochemistry from the University of Leipzig and a PhD in molecular biology from the University of Zurich. In her postdoctoral work at University College Dublin, she focused on macrophage biology and GWAS follow-up in rheumatoid arthritis. Since joining the journal in February 2017, Michelle has been handling manuscripts on human genetics, in particular disease genetics. She is based in the London office.

EARTH TEAM
The Earth team covers all aspects of Earth, environmental and planetary sciences, past, present and future, from the fundamental physical, chemical and biological principles of the Earth system to broader solid Earth processes and surface, ocean and atmospheric dynamics. The team also considers the interactions between humans and these systems, including climate and environmental impacts, and the implications for the economy, policy and society.

Melissa started her editorial career at Nature Communications in 2016 and then moved to Nature Geoscience before rejoining Nature Communications in August 2019. Her research used petrology and geochemistry to unravel the driving forces behind explosive volcanic eruptions. She has a PhD in volcanology from the University of East Anglia followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Witwatersand. Melissa oversees the Earth Science content at the journal and handles manuscripts across all areas of Earth Science. Melissa is based in the London office.

Associate Editor: Jasper Franke
Jasper joined Nature Communications in April 2019. A physicist by training, he obtained his MSc from Heidelberg University, before continuing to work on his PhD at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and Humboldt University of Berlin. In his thesis he adapted data analysis methods rooted in complex network theory to be combined with paleoclimate data. At Nature Communications, he handles manuscripts related to climate, both recent and past, as well as hydroclimate and atmosphere dynamics. He is based in the Berlin office.

Kyle joined Nature Communications in April 2019. He obtained his PhD in Earth and Environmental Sciences from the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University and conducted postdoctoral research at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, France. A biological oceanographer with a background studying marine microbes and their role in geochemical cycles, Kyle handles submissions in diverse areas of biogeoscience from the New York office.

Associate Editor: Sebastian Müller
Sebastian joined Nature Communications in November 2018. He graduated with a Master’s degree from Lancaster University (UK) in Volcanology and Geological Hazards and obtained a PhD in physical Volcanology from LMU Munich, Germany. Sebastian continued as a NSF research fellow at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa (USA), working on the characteristics of Hawaiian style lava fountaining at Kīlauea Volcano. He has collected further work experience both at the Colima Volcanology Research Center (Mexico) and the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (West Indies). Sebastian handles manuscripts on solid Earth sciences and terrestrial bodies of our Solar System. He is based in the Berlin office.

Associate Editor: Erin Scott
Erin is a geologist and igneous geochemist fascinated by plate tectonics and all things ‘rocky’. For her PhD, Erin studied the uplift and tectonics of the Andean mountain belt at Durham University, UK, particularly by tracking changes in the geochemistry of Andean magmatism over time. Erin joined the Earth Team at Nature Communications in January 2019, and handles manuscripts covering the topics of tectonics, geodynamics, geochemistry and petrology.

Yang joined Nature Communications in January 2018 as the first social science editor. She has a BS in economics, a MS in sustainability, both from the University of Leeds, and a doctorate in ecological economics from the University of East Anglia, where her research focuses on quantitative assessment of the socioeconomic impacts of health outcomes resulting from disasters such as heat-waves and air pollution. She handles manuscripts on socio-economics, climate-related health risks, climate policy and sustainability. She is based in the London office.
