Abstract Experimental studies of the effect of variable acceleration achieved by vertical oscillations of a vessel with superfluid helium He-II on the formation of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability on the surface of a liquid have been carried out. It is observed that the development of the parametric instability and then Faraday waves on the surface leads to a significant decrease in a heat power and hence a critical velocity of the normal component under the He-II surface, above which the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability starts to develop.
