An outbreak of Ebola virus disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is likely to spread to neighbouring countries but is not yet a global public health emergency, a committee of experts decided on 17 October.
The committee, convened by the World Health Organization, is “very seriously concerned” about an outbreak that has killed 139 people since it was declared on 1 August, and the situation is “likely to deteriorate significantly” if the international response does not intensify, said the committee chair, Robert Steffen.
