A biocompatible and flexible piezoelectric generator with high-quality boron nitride nanotubes from human running

Lead-free wearable piezoelectric energy harvesters have attracted great attention due to their vital importance in portable energy-harvesting and personal electronics. Here we first report a flexible generator based on newly high-quality eco-friendly boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) under human mechanical stress to generate electric performance. The flexible BNNT generator (BG) exhibited peak voltage of 25 V, peak current of 140 nA, and energy conversion efficiency of 21.6% under applying a periodic compressive strain of 0.2% (weight: 80 kg). This device is shown to be a reliable power source that can be used to light up commercial light-emitting diode (white, red, violet). The flexible BNNT Energy Insole (BEI) demonstrated is capable of meeting the requirements of wearable energy source because it generates peak voltage of 10 V, peak current of 65 nA, and charging on capacitor (capacity: 1 μF) during human running (weight: 80 kg). Finally, the BEI is quite promising for application in personal portable electronics.
