ε-martensite formation for low strains in a lean duplex stainless steel

Abstract Martensitic transformation induced by strain in duplex stainless steels is a good option to increase their strength and elongation. The influence of low deformation levels on the phase transformation was studied in a 2304 lean duplex stainless steel. It was demonstrated that this steel exhibited the phase transformation of austenite (γ) into epsilon (e) and alpha (α′) martensite after cold rolling. The e and α′ were observed in shear bands and close to the grain boundaries. The Shoji–Nishiyama relation 110 γ / / 2110 e was observed. Hitherto, the e formation has not been reported in the literature for this steel by cold deformation.
