JAMA Surgery thanks Karl Bilimoria, MD, MS, for his extraordinary service and contributions to the journal as a member of the Editorial Board. Effective July 1, 2018, JAMA Surgery is pleased to announce the appointment of Amir A. Ghaferi, MD, MS, to our Editorial Board.

Amir A. Ghaferi, MD, MS, received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland. He completed his general surgery residency and a fellowship in health services research at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and obtained his master of science degree in Health and Healthcare Research at the same institution. Dr Ghaferi is a tenured associate professor of surgery at University of Michigan School of Medicine and is an associate professor of management and organizations at University of Michigan Ross School of Business. He was recently named the inaugural surgical director of Michigan Medicine’s University Hospital Operating Rooms, where he oversees strategic, operational, and quality initiatives across the system. He is also the director of the Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative, a statewide quality improvement consortium of more than 40 hospitals and 80 surgeons. He is the secretary of the Association for Academic Surgery and president of the Surgical Outcomes Club. Dr Ghaferi’s clinical practice is devoted to advanced laparoscopy, including gastroesophageal reflux surgery, bariatric surgery, and treatment of abdominal wall and groin hernias. His research focuses on understanding the associations of organizational systems and design with quality and efficiency, with the goal of designing interventions to improve care locally, regionally, and nationally. His research is currently funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute.
