A new photoluminescence (PL) probe based on a formyl bearing bis-cyclometalated Ir(iii ) complex, [Ir(ppy)2 phen-CHO]+ PF6 − (1), is synthesized and applied to the selective detection of a bisulfite anion (HSO3 − ).
