In this issue ofCell Chemical Biology,Knoops et al. (2018)use a novel approach in immunology: combining confocal microscopy and atomic force microscopy to unravel the specific interaction of oxidized peroxiredoxin-5 with Toll-like receptor 4 that leads to the release of interleukin-1β and the stiffening of mammalian cells.
