Growth and luminescent properties of Yb:YAG and Ca co-doped Yb:YAG ultrafast scintillation crystals

Abstract In this work, Yb-doped Y3Al5O12 [yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG)] crystals and Ca co-doped Yb:YAG crystals were grown by the Czochralski (CZ) method. The chemical formulas of the two crystals are (Yb0.1Y0.9)3Al5O12 and (Ca0.001Yb0.1Y0.899)3Al5O12, respectively. The structural, optical and luminescent properties of the Yb:YAG and Ca, Yb:YAG crystals were investigated by X-ray rocking curve, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectra, UV–Visble-NIR absorption spectra and X-ray fluorescence. X-ray fluorescence spectrum with two emission peaks at 330 nm and 490 nm were observed in the two kinds of crystals, which would increase slightly after the annealing. Comparing to the Yb:YAG crystal, Ca co-doped Yb:YAG crystal behaved the better luminescent intensity without changing the crystal structure and vibrational modes. This indicates that by doping Ca2+ in Yb:YAG crystal may be an appropriate way to enhance the luminescent property of the scintillation crystal.
