To the Editor In a Teachable Moment published in a recent issue of JAMA Internal Medicine, Wickerman and colleagues1 discuss an important and a pervasive issue of keeping hospitalized patients nil per os (NPO) for long periods, before imaging tests and procedures. They give an example of a patient with diabetes who developed hypoglycemia after being unnecessarily kept NPO for an imaging procedure to illustrate how a seemingly benign NPO order can cause adverse events.
