Persistence of Sexual Harassment and Gender Bias in Medicine Across Generations—Us Too

We welcome this important perspective on gender bias in medicine by DeFilippis.1 We were struck by how much we can relate to the author’s anecdotes, both as attending physicians and as trainees: these experiences, though not novel, continue to be all too familiar.

DeFilippis describes instances of sexual harassment, disrespect, and lack of awareness of sexism by patients, colleagues, and supervisors. In our experience, these behaviors are not always limited to male supervisors. We know these problems persist despite decades of increasing female presence in the physician workforce.2 Our goal in publishing this perspective is to highlight a shared and distressing female experience: to be a woman in medicine, whether in training or in a senior role, includes the unique challenge of facing sexist behavior from patients and even colleagues on a regular basis in an already stressful work environment. The impact of a cascade of small injustices that women physicians deal with every day undermines our daily work and collectively sends a demeaning message about our worth in the work place.
