Reaction has been mixed in Australia to news that the southern state of Victoria (home to some 6 million people, one quarter of the country's population) has approved an assisted dying bill that will enable certain terminally ill patients to end their lives with the assistance of a physician. On Nov 22, 2017, the state's upper house voted 22–18 to approve the controversial bill, with some members openly weeping as they cast their vote. Members from all parties were allowed a conscience vote (meaning they could vote how they personally wanted to vote on the issue).
