Magnetically responsive membrane obtained by grafting polyHEMA on nanofiltration membrane by atom transfer radical polymerization was demonstrated to break concentration polarization by micro mixing in presence of external magnetic field during the treatment of coal bed methane produced water. A systematic study was carried out to optimize the time and frequency of the magnetic field with respect to the increased energy costs for creating the field and decreased pumping costs due to increased flux. The effect of optimized experimental parameters on the performance of the modified membranes has been investigated in terms of permeability and salt rejection. A comparative evaluation was carried out to investigate the effect of cleaning and change in surface properties in terms of functionality as well as morphology due to the treatment of actual coal bed methane produced water using base membrane and magnetically activated membranes.
