We thank Petra Havinga and colleagues for their suggestion that we investigate the possibility of an interaction between paternal and maternal depressive symptoms in our datasets. As Havinga and colleagues state, we found evidence to support independent influences of paternal and maternal depressive symptoms on offspring depressive symptoms at 14 years of age. We used linear statistical models, which assume additive relationships between exposure variables. We have investigated the possibility of non-additive influences of paternal and maternal depressive symptoms.
