A new class of light-controlled molecular switches based on an azodicarboxamide chromophore is described by S. Amirjalayer, S. Woutersen, W. J. Buma et al. in their Communication on page 1792 ff. These switches work like the crankshaft of a bicycle and, as switching requires a very small volume, will function even in rock-solid spatial constraints. The pedalo-like switching is observed in real time by using time-resolved vibrational spectroscopy to monitor the light-induced dynamics.
