On Nov 16, 2016, the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) modified its global recommendations for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which were published shortly afterwards and relabelled as GOLD 2017.¹ Among other changes, the GOLD 2017 classification greatly simplified the COPD staging available from 2011 to 2015, from three to two variables. A previous GOLD grading combining spirometry, history of COPD exacerbations, and symptoms,² which aimed “never to improve prognosis, but aid management”,³ was retired.
