More than 200 000 chemicals have been synthesised by human beings, most since the chemical revolution that began during World War 2. Aside from those specifically designated for warfare, the vast majority were designed to improve our health and quality of life, enhance manufacturing and technology, and provide us with toys, clothes, furniture, housing, cleaners, and personal care products. About 1000 are classified as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) due to their ability to mimic or block the action of natural hormones and interfere with development and function.
