Childers et al¹ revealed that only 25.0% of patients with breast and ovarian cancer who met five of the 16 National Comprehensive Cancer Network criteria for BRCA1/2 testing had discussions with health care providers about it and that only 13.8% had been tested. We have indicated that literacy related to genomics (genomic literacy)—that is, individuals’ knowledge and understanding about genetics and genomics—is essential in applying genomic information to clinical practices.² Notably, genomic literacy will be important for future clinical applications of genomic information, as more genes and their mutations are researched.
