In 2010, the lack of contemporary health information about women in early adulthood led the Australian Government Department of Health to provide funding for the establishment of a cohort of women who would be aged 18–23 years in 2012–13. This would be the fourth cohort of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health (ALSWH). Since 1996, the Australian Government Department of Health has funded the ALSWH to obtain data on health and health service use from three cohorts of women, born in 1973–78, 1946–51 and 1921–26.
