Natural and synthetic antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) symbolize a new family of antibiotics that have stimulated research and clinical interest as new therapeutic options for infections. Besides being antimicrobial, AMPs are shown to bind and neutralize bacterial endotoxins, and they also have immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, wound-healing, angiogenic and antitumor properties. Herein, we present an overview of the general mechanism of action of AMPs, recent developments on carriers of AMPs and their potential applications in the medical fields.
