Visit the app store on your mobile phone (assuming you have a smartphone); download the BBC Pandemic app; answer a few preliminary questions on your age, gender, and so forth; and then go about your business. The app will run for 24 h, tracking your movements at regular intervals to the nearest square kilometre. Afterwards, you will be asked a few questions about the people with whom you have interacted over the previous day and a team of researchers at Cambridge University (Cambridge, UK) and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM; London, UK) will sift through the anonymised data in the hope of mapping the possible course of a large influenza outbreak in the UK.
