First page of articleThe prevalence of asthma, or at least exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, is far higher in elite athletes than in the general population.1 Although the pathogenesis of exercise-related respiratory symptoms is not always clear, potentially relevant airway hyper-responsiveness has been detected in two-thirds of athletes that compete internationally,2 and 5–10 % of these athletes are regularly treated for asthma symptoms.3
