Dixon Chibanda—“Taking mental health to the community”

It might seem strange that a psychiatrist in a nation that is in dire need of mental-health specialists would discourage the construction of new mental-health facilities. But Dixon Chibanda, based in the Zimbabwean capital city of Harare, believes that “We should not think of building more institutions but should instead take mental health to the community.” With this concept in mind, Chibanda—along with psychologists Petra Mesu and Lazarus Kajawu—established the Friendship Bench: a network of lay workers trained to provide assistance to people with depression and anxiety.
